Melissa McCormick - Profile
Melissa McCormick I was a late starter in the dance world, not starting until I was 9 after seeing my cousin dance and from then on I have always loved it. I started jazz at Stewart Dance Studios sitting exams each year and then at age 13 I decided to try out ballet with Stewarts. I was fortunate enough to improve my style and be put in the Stewarts Performing Group in which we danced annually at competitions and events. In 1996 we fundraised and travelled to Sydney to attend an intense week of training in dance, drama, singing and acrobatics at the elite Brent Street Studios. I was fortunate again to be able return for another week of training in 1997.

Through my love of dance I began competing in solo and group competitions throughout the North Island and in 1999 I gained a nomination for the Young Performer of the Year Awards, attending the final in Wellington. This inspired my desire to dance so in July 2000 when the opportunity came along I auditioned for the Lion King Sydney Production and made the final 10 only to be too short.

I began my teaching career at Stewarts in 1999, assisting the principal teacher and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In 2000 I completed my NZAMD Advanced and Solo Seal Jazz exams with distinction and was given the opportunity to teach on my own and choreograph routines for our schools annual production. I also picked up two students whom I teach for solo comps and continue to do so.

In 2002 I sat the NZAMD New Intermediate Syllabus and gained entry to the NZAMD Jazz Scholarships in which I won Category B. I travelled once again with Stewarts Dance Studios in 2003 to Melbourne where we attend a weeks training at Dance World 301, a leading full time school in Melbourne. We also had the opportunity to compete at the Crown International Championships whilst in Melbourne gaining three 4ths and a 2nd for a hip hop number which I choreographed. I also competed in two solo sections, Jazz Solo over 21 years which I won and Hip Hop Solo Open where I made it to the Semis (the winner going to Germany).

While continuing with Stewarts I moved my ballet training to where Rose was situated at Rose McRae Dance Academy. I sat my NZAMD Solo Seal Ballet in Sept 2003 and passed gaining my teacher registration for both jazz and ballet.

I left Stewarts in 2003 and focused on classes at RMDA and also City Dance. I have now been given the greatest opportunity to run the jazz school for RMDA under Rose.

My passion and forte is modern jazz and I am honoured to be given the opportunity to pass on my knowledge, wisdom and love of dance to those whom I will be teaching.
